Antarctica Day 9-10: Returning to the World

The Beagle Channel It’s now about 7pm in the evening and we are just about to enter the Beagle Channel, from the infamous Drake Passage, which means we will be in the port of Ushuaia, Argentina before midnight. We’ll stay aboard the Dream until morning when all the passengers go there separate ways, spread all across the world.

We’ve suffered the wrath of an angry Sir Francis Drake in the last day or two, and he hasn’t been as gentle with us as he was on the way out. However, although the seas have been much rougher Cape Horn from the Drake Passage I haven’t been anywhere near as ill as I was on our way out. Dolly didn’t make it for dinner last night, but I did manage to take here a plate of fresh fruit to our cabin, purely for the scurvy. ;)

We woke several times in the night as things in our cabin rolled from one side of the room to the other, including us. We heard all the toiletries in the bathroom smash all over the place and the TV remote control crash to the floor. Dolly herself nearly crashed to the floor as well, as Sir Francis Drake himself tried to push her out of bed; she had to stuff a duvet down the side of the mattress to keep herself from falling out.

This afternoon we were treated to a view of Cape Horn from afar, of course we didn’t round the badboy, as it’s one of the most dangerous areas of sea in the world. I nipped outside breifly for photos, the only time I’d been outside all day. On the bridge there were plenty of Last night aboard volunteers eager to tell stories of ships lost around here, but it’s a great spot for photos!

We’ve just had our final briefing of the expedition and soon we have Captain Skoggy’s farewell dinner. All that’s left to say is what an amazing experience that last 10 days have been, worth far more than every penny. Antarctica is easily the most wondrously beautiful and strangest place I have ever been. It’s is an experience neither of us will ever forget, which makes our engagement there all the more special.

WOW!!! Congratulations!!!!! Am sooooo excited!!! Was keen to read through all the adventures on Antartica and dutifully started a Day 1-3 and kept scrolling through only to be amazed at Day 6! What an amazing place to get engaged. We are so happy for you. All our love Rachel & Neil xx P.S. A true engagement needs a few bottles of Champagne to wash it down with. I remember feeling equally sick as a dog myself for 24 hours after and I wasn’t on a boat!
