Little Mermaid

Never been particulary interested in the Under Water World and was quite satisfied viewing the likes of the Blue Planet, The Little Mermaid and Finding Nemo on the big screen at home on the sofa!

We arrived in Honduras and that was about to change!

Having read the trusted travellers bible (the lonely planet), the Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras were recommended as being the most beautiful (and cheapest, we’re travellers on a budget remember, hahah) place to dive in Central America!

So I thought well Nemo and friends look like they have a pretty goodtime down there and maybe Dolly should check out all the excitement! She enrolled in the PADI Open Water!!!!!

We arrived on Caye Jewel and I was introduced to Klaas, my German Dive Instructor, fortunately I didn’t fancy him which is always a god send as this can be so off putting when one is trying to concentrate!

Within 5 minutes I was dressed in a wet suit (which is so unfetching), mask and snorkel, pink snorkel I must add, was pretty pleased with my choice! Doll all scuba'd up

Straight in the water no messing…… we practiced lots of skills and the one that I wouldn’t mind never doing again is filling your mask with WATER, whilst of course under water!!!!! Mmmm brain thinks ‘Oooo I have a nose and it’s for breathing’ yeah you wanna pretty much forget that your nose exists as it’s virtually impossible to sniff through one’s nose and then swallow sea water when you’re 60 feet under and you have a regulator in ya mouth! The feeling of your nose being free to this amount of water is quite disturbing hahaha! The force of you wanting to sniff is incrediable and each time we did this task I had to repeat over again to myself, ‘you have no nose, you have no nose’! Once you place the mask back on you face you then have the challenge of getting rid of the water that of course has filled up ya mask! Now you have to remember you have a nose but that you can only BLOW out of it! You have to blow out from your nose the water that has collated in ya mask, believe me this is not a great experience and one that I won’t miss!

After practicing all the various skills under water you have to sit an exam!!!! Arghhhhhh EXAM, what I haven’t been to school in 10 years what do you mean I have to study each night and sit an exam, I’m thought diving was supposed to be FUN!

Well like a good student and lots of encouragement from Rick I sat down and did the exam, wow I thought me head was gonna explode, I haven’t had to concentrate particulary for the last two months let alone concentrate on DIVE Tables, and air consumption! You’re not allowed a calculator ya know!

After one hour and lots of brow sweating (apparently Rick was watching me and I nearly rubbed my eyebrows away, hahah) I handed in my completed paper to Klaas and gave him a little smile in hopes he would take pity on me when marking my paper!

Well it turns out the girl did good, no pity needed and I passed on 86%, WOOHOOOOOOO!

I am now an OPEN WATER Qualified Diver, check me out! See it’s not all about laying on a beach ya know when ya travelling one has worked very hard hahaha.

me and Dolly Rick and I had two fun dives included in our courses, (ooops forgot to mention, god I only wanna talk about myself hahah my wondeful boy passed his Advance Diving and is now qualified to go that little bit deeper!) and we went down as Buddy’s and swam with the fish and had a fantastic time, check out the pics.

Buddies Well congrats to me and now I plan to get back to me sun bathing! xxxx

Glad you had a great time - I hated the first time I had to clear a full mask (it was in water with a tempreature of 2 degrees and no very pleasant. Thankfully I now scuba in warmer waters. Never been as far south as Honduras but may consider it in future.
